Camping at Camp Edison

Updated: Apr 17, 2019

Camp Edison is a wonderful campground on the western shores of Shaver Lake, California.

If you are looking for a campground in the Sierra National Forest I recommend you look into Camp Edison. You can find the camp at 42696 Tallhouse Rd, Shaver Lake, CA. This was a wonderful family friendly campground, about a 6 hour drive from Orange County.

This campsite was perfect for tent camping, I saw people with big campers having a really hard time getting in and out of their camping spots. We paid $50 a night for a medium camp spot were we fitted 2 tents and 2 cars on with plenty of space to spear, we had running water within sight and electricity at our site. There was bear lockers for your food, that we didn't need because bears didn't come in the the campground. But we did have chipmunks that got into everything. So make sure you bring plastic bins to lock up your food. Each site also had a fire pit. The bathrooms were really clean and the shower rooms was nice and big. Remember to get a shower card at the main gate when you come in. One card lasted 4 of us all weekend.

Make sure you check out the Visitors Center, you will find all kinds of information there about the history of the campsite. Also ask about any activities they may have for children. We did a boat tour where we tried to spot eagle nests around the lake, a nature tour where we learned all about the flowers in the area and then there was a bonfire where they told us about all the night time animals. All these activities were free to attend . There's lots of spots to go fishing, or kayaking around the lake, or you can hangout and swim at the beach. Make sure you get to the beach early to clam your spot because it can get really busy and the parking lot is small. The only downside was that you had to drive to the beach because it was a fair hike from your camp site. Other than that we loved our time there.

Things to do and see on the way there or on the way back:

33341 Bernard Dr, Kettleman City, CA 93239

This is a wonderful stop for photos. They have a petting zoo, shooting gallery and even a singing buffalo.

2. The Shop @ Bravo Farms

36005 CA-99, Traver, CA 93673

Here you will find the Guinness Book of World Records tallest tree house.

You can climb the seven story tree house all the way to the top.

5021 W Shaw Ave, Fresno, CA 93722

This is for sure a must stop if you are in the area. Baldasare build himself a home underground over a period of 40 years. On the guided tour you get to walk all the tunnels, exploring his home. I don't recommend this tour for very small children, it's long with a lot of talking and information.

From Clovis, California, travel east on Highway 168 to Shaver Lake. Turn southeast onto Dinkey Creek Road and travel 13 miles to the campground.

We took a day trip out to Dinkey Creek to go slide down their natural river slides. It was only a 30 minute drive from our campground. Make sure you pack a lunch and pack some black bags to help you slide down the slides. The slides are formed by the river washing over the rocks forming a gentle rapid effect. Lots of fun although can lead to sore bottoms.

You will have to pay a entry park fee, if i remember right it was only $10 for the day.
